Widely considered the most charming musical ever written, this delightful confection promises to bring out the hopeless romantic in all of us with its heartfelt story and colorful characters. With a witty, melodic score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof,) and book by Joe Masteroff (Cabaret), the musical is the third adaptation of the 1937 play, Parfumerie, by Hungarian playwright Miklos Laszio following the 1940 James Stewart-Margaret Sullivan film, The Shop Around the Corner and the 1949 Judy Garland-Van Johnson musical version, In the Good Old Summertime. The story surfaced again in the Tom Hanks- Meg Ryan feature, You’ve Got Mail.
SHE LOVES ME is set in an elegant Budapest parfumerie, where a new sales clerk, Amalia Balash (Alicia Culleton) and store manager Georg Novack (Ryan Simme), are constantly butting heads on the job. Unaware that each other have responded to the same ‘lonely hearts’ ad in the newspaper, the couple become anonymous pen pals. Known only as ‘Dear Friend’ in their letters to each other. they become the most unlikely of lovebirds. The parfumerie, owned by Mr. Maraczek (Albert Ulozas) has a diverse group of employees, including sales clerks Ladislav Sipos (Evan Schwatz), a fretful middle-aged salesman, a wisecracking thirty-something Ilona Ritter (Nicolette Adams), suave Steven Kodaly (Justin Damm) and a teenage delivery boy Arpad Laszlo (Schyler Marsh)
The show showcases a small but strong ensemble cast playing a range of memorable characters of all ages. The ensemble includes Emma Bartholomew, Gary Bullock, Danielle Cantor, Natalie DiNenno, Catherine Lavell, Hudson Marsh, Steve and Yvonne Montgomery, Ken Olin, Janice Orner, Michael Radzwilla, and Stephanie Weidner.
The creative team includes director Deb Schrager, music and choral direction by Brian Shapella, orchestra conductor, Barbara Newberry and choreographer, Sally Rothschild.
Set construction lead and stage manager is Harvey Perelman with set decoration by local artist, Michael Adams and Mia Curtis. Sound and photography by Don Otto and lights by Dean Soltes. Props are by Ilene Perelman and Yvonne Montgomery. The beautiful, period costumes are by Elisabeth Majewski. The producers, Kristen Bailey, Michelle Miller and Loretta Rurode bring it all together.
