The Barley Sheaf Players will be continuing their annual holiday tradition of producing a family-friendly show this December. As part of their 50th season, Barley Sheaf has been reviving some of our favorite musicals and plays that we have performed over the past five decades, and our Holiday Show this year is no exception. This year, the Barley Sheaf Players are delighted to present A Year with Frog and Toad, a feel-good, toe-tapping musical that is fun for kids and adults alike!
A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD is a musical based on the beloved series of “Frog and Toad” children’s books by Arnold Lobel. The show follows best friends Frog and Toad through a series of woodland adventures that take place over the course of a year. Part vaudeville, part make-believe, and all charm, A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of a friendship that endures throughout the seasons.
A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD broke new ground as one of the first shows to bring professional children’s theatre to Broadway. It played Off-Broadway and on Broadway in 2002 and 2003, often to sold-out audiences, and has been a beloved staple of community theatres for years. The Barley Sheaf Players originally staged the show in 2006 and are thrilled to be able to bring it back to our stage during our golden anniversary season.
One of the things that makes the Holiday Show at Barley Sheaf so special is that it is a rare opportunity for adult and child actors to work together on a project. While Barley Sheaf has a Teen Show and a Children’s Show each summer, those casts consist only of youths, whereas the Holiday Show is a unique chance for both adults and kids to work side-by-side – both on stage and behind the scenes! It is also a time when many family members can enjoy working on a show together. This year, sisters Alexis and Julia Weisenberg get the chance to act on-stage together in A Year with Frog and Toad.
The director of A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD, Deb Young, is no stranger to working with children. She has worked with many children in the past in her role as a costumer, and this past summer, she directed the Barley Sheaf Children’s Show, The Most Epic Birthday Party Ever. Producer Rhonda Bastarache also holds the annual Holiday Show dear to her heart, as she has directed several Barley Sheaf Holiday Shows in the past, including last year’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.
A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD opens Friday, December 1st and runs for two weekends, through December 10th (Friday & Saturday nights at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm). Tickets for the annual Holiday Show often sell out quickly, so any families interested should purchase their tickets soon. Tickets may be purchased online at www.barleysheaf.org, or by calling the box office at 610-363-7075.
