TITANIC, THE MUSICAL
Opens at Jenkintown
Music Theatre March 31
Jenkintown Music Theatre is excited to announce that its 2017 production of TITANIC, THE MUSICAL will open March 31st and run through April 8th. Titanic the Musical won the 1997 Tony for Best Musical and is sure to be a hit with local audiences young and old.
Titanic the Musical is based on the story and book by Peter Stone and music and lyrics by Maury Yeston. JMT is thrilled that long-time local theater Director and Elkins Park native Deb Schrager is back for her second show at the helm as JMT’s Director. Deb wants audiences to know that unlike the movie, this isn’t a fictional telling of Jack and Rose. Rather, the writers of this musical retelling of the doomed White Star Line Ship’s maiden voyage did extensive research into the real people on the ship and the focus of the show is on the ship’s actual passengers. For instance, the Wideners from Elkins Park are featured in the show as well as other millionaires from the time like the Astors, Guggenheim and the Strauss’. Second and third class stories are also represented and the result is an insightful look into the existing class system at the time. The opportunity to perform in this moving show has brought out several new and talented performers who are excited to join the JMT stage in what promises to be one of JMT’s best productions in this its 72nd year .
Co-Music Director Emily Ballentine Erb speaks for the entire cast and crew when she says they have all been “swept away’ by this stunning piece of musical theater. Says Emily, “The most special thing about the score is its beautiful, powerful music: from the opening soaring intervals when passengers see this amazing ship for the first time to the very end where it is obviously a different emotion and loved ones are being lost and lives torn apart.” Director Deb Schrager adds, “For me, working on Titanic has re-emphasized the fragility of life and the importance of the journey.”
