Kick off your holidays with City Theater Company, opening their 23rd season this December with LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. The hilarious musical comedy by Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Herman inspired the hit film The Birdcage and is one of Broadway’s most popular and enduring shows.
Producing Artistic Director Michael Gray directs. Designers Vicki Neal and Richard Kendrick transform The Black Box into the titular nightclub, home to couple Georges and Albin (Paul McElwee and Patrick O’Hara) who perform a successful nightly drag show featuring Saint-Tropez’s famous Cagelles. But it’s off-stage where the real hijinks ensue, when son Jean-Michel brings home his fiancée–-and her super-conservative parents.
Says Gray “It’s a song-and-dance extravaganza, with big numbers and comic antics and fun costumes—all grounded by very real relationships, and by questions about what it is that creates family. Beneath the glitz is a story about love and relationships. That’s why this show has been beloved for generations.”
Veteran actor Patrick O’Hara agrees. “Bringing Albin to life is a challenge any actor would welcome, because there are so many layers—insecure Albin is unstoppable as his female alter-ego, Za Za. For the sake of his family, he takes an enormous risk, and his arc comes to completion when the two merge. It is a love story, after all is said and done. Love conquers all.”
LA CAGE AUX FOLLES stars William Bryant, Zachary Chiero, Zach DeBevec, Dylan Geringer, Andrew Dean Laino, Mary Catherine Kelley, Kerry Kristine McElrone, Paul McElwee, Adam Montgomery, Patrick O’Hara, Christian Ryan, Grace Tarves, Greg Tigani.
Directed by Michael Gray. Music directed by Joe Trainor. Choreographed by Dawn Morningstar and Devon Fields. Scenic and lighting design by Vicki Neal and Richard Kendrick. Costume design by Rob Paluso. Stage managed by Stuart Thomas.
