CAMDEN, N.J. — March 22, 2016 – South Camden Theatre Company, a nonprofit professional theatre organization located in Camden, New Jersey announces its twelfth season for 2016 and 2017 titled Gods and Emperors featuring works written by Eugene O’Neill, Colm Tóibín, Joseph M. Opening the twelfth season October 7 – 23, 2016 is THE EMPEROR JONES written by Eugene O’Neill and directed by Connie Norwood. This classic play follows Brutus Jones an African American man who escapes prison and flees to a West Indian island where he crowns himself emperor.
Running from January 13 – 29, 2017 is the regional premiere of THE TESTAMENT OF MARY written by Colm Tóibín and directed by Joseph M. Paprzycki. Nominated for a 2013 Tony Award the play portrays Mary the Virgin Mother’s detailed account of the final days in the life of her son, Jesus and her struggle to accept his fate.
SCTC continues with the world premiere of VISIONS OF BEATITUDE written by Joseph M. Paprzycki and directed by Nicole Lerario opening March 10 through March 26, 2017. When summoned by a saint, playwrights Tennessee Williams and Eugene O’Neill meet in a bar in Provincetown, Massachusetts where they are challenged to write about each other in order to find redemption.
Season twelve concludes with MY NAME IS ASHER LEV running May 5-21, 2017. Adapted by Aaron Posner from the book by Chaim Potok and directed by Josh McLucas the play follows a Jewish boy whose artistic intentions and talent come in direct conflict with his family and community traditions.
Producing Artistic Director Joseph M. Paprzycki states, “Work began more than six months ago to bring the next season to fruition with a theme of Gods and Emperors. I am especially excited to direct the regional premiere of THE TESTAMENT OF MARY and showcase the world premiere of my new play VISIONS OF BEATITUDE which came to life through our summer reading series at South Camden Theatre Company. Season twelve continues our mission to bringing edgy, relevant, professional theatre to our home in Camden, New Jersey on stage at Waterfront South Theatre”.
