PHILADELPHIA (October 14, 2015) – Philadelphia theatre company B Sharp Productions will produce the Pennsylvania premiere of the new musical, THE PERFECT DOG, November 7-8 in Harleysville as part of The National Dog Show and the Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s Dog Shows.
The theatrical production will be staged at Towamencin Volunteer Fire Co. in Harleysville on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Sunday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. Tickets costing $5 will be available at the door.
THE PERFECT DOG was adapted from the book of the same name by John O’Hurley, the author and television personality who hosts the Philadelphia-based National Dog Show Presented by Purina Thanksgiving Day special on NBC. O’Hurley will be at the National Dog Show in Oaks on Saturday, Nov. 14, to tape the NBC special and meet the B Sharp Productions players involved in the musical. The two-day run of THE PERFECT DOG is licensed by Theatrical Rights Worldwide as part of its Theatre for Young Audiences catalogue.
In the play, Sam, a 12 year-old perfectionist, must resort to training Max, the not-so-obedient family dog, for the “Town Dog Contest.” In the end, Sam and Max learn that there is no such thing as perfect, but there is such a thing as perfect for each other.
“This is such a fabulous opportunity for us to work with the Kennel Club of Philadelphia shows and be part of the annual excitement around these happenings,” said Laura Clattenburg, co-founder of B Sharp Productions. “The players and kids involved in the production will get to meet Mr. O’Hurley at the shows, so that is a bonus.”
O’Hurley, best known for his role as catalogue king J. Peterman on Seinfeld, has authored three books – Before The Dog Can Eat Your Homework First You Have To Do It: Life Lessons from a Wise Old Dog to a Young Boy, the New York Times bestseller It’s Okay to Miss the Bed on the First Jump and The Perfect Dog (Penguin Group, 2013), which inspired the children’s musical that has just been released.
O’Hurley returns for his 14th consecutive year as host of The National Dog Show Presented by Purina®. Dubbed one of People magazine’s “Sexiest Men Alive,” he received a Screen Actors Guild Award for his work on Seinfeld.
The two-day Kennel Club of Philadelphia’s National Dog Show is one of only four remaining “benched” shows in America, meaning the dogs and their handlers are in designated locations all day to meet and greet the public when they are not competing for “Best in Show.” The shows are open to the public and also feature agility dogs, diving dogs and action dogs. Admission is $14 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. Children three and under are admitted free. Tickets and additional information are available at nds.nationaldogshow.com.
The B Sharp Productions’ presentation of THE PERFECT DOG is part of National Dog Show Month in Philadelphia, which started with a charity dog walk on Oct. 10. The dog show activities continue with the annual press preview on Nov. 5 at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House followed by the presentation of The Perfect Dog at Towamencin Volunteer Fire Co., The National Dog Show gala on Nov. 13 at Valley Forge Casino and then the two benched shows that weekend at the Expo Center. It all culminates with the National Dog Show Presented by Purina – hosted by O’Hurley – on NBC 10 Thanksgiving Day from noon to 2 p.m. following the Macy’s Parade.
